On the fourth day, we were up early, as we were driving from Bucharest back north to the city of Brasov, deep in the Carpathians.
The distance from Bucharest to Brasov is only about 180 kilometers, so we wouldn’t have had to wake up so early for a direct drive. However, on the way from Bucharest to Brasov, just about 60 kilometers before Brasov, lies the town of Sinaia. Here stands Peles Castle, known as Romania's fairytale castle. It was built in the 19th century for King Carol I. The castle is perfect for a stopover for those interested in history and for those who want to be captivated by the castle’s playful architecture. We didn’t want to miss this highlight either.
After a short visit, we continued on to Brasov. Our first stop there was the Black Church, the city's landmark. It is a Gothic building and impresses not only with its size but also with its extraordinary color. If you have time, you can enter the church and view the interior, but we decided to skip that.
Since Brasov is located directly at the foot of Mount Tampa, this makes it ideal for a short excursion to enjoy the magnificent view. If you have time, you can hike up the mountain. This is manageable for anyone with a basic level of fitness. Due to our tight schedule, we opted for the easier option and took the cable car. Once at the top, we felt a bit guilty among all those who had hiked up the mountain, but the view over the city was still beautiful.
After descending from Tampa, we headed to the Town Hall Square. Here, we soaked in the atmosphere and enjoyed a good Romanian dinner in the sun. The previous three packed days were starting to take their toll.
