The special toll refers to special toll routes. These special toll routes are often tunnels or mountain passes, which are associated with higher construction and maintenance costs. Building tunnels involves greater technical challenges, which in turn require specialized machinery and technologies, resulting in high costs.
An additional fee must be paid to use the special toll routes, as these routes are exempt from the vignette requirement in Romania but are still subject to toll charges. This means that even if you have already purchased a vignette, you must pay an extra fee for certain tunnels and mountain pass roads. Note that most special toll routes can only be accessed via vignette-required access roads. Therefore, it always makes sense to purchase a vignette, regardless of the special toll route. By the way: there is no distance-based toll in Romania.
Special toll routes in Romania include Danube crossings. The Danube flows within Romania and separates the two countries (Romania and Bulgaria). If you wish to use one of the many bridges or the ferry to cross, additional fees will apply.
