What makes these ski resorts special? They allow you to discover skiing or snowboarding without the high prices for ski passes or accommodations found in Austria, Switzerland, or France.
The Straja Ski Resort is located in Hunedoara County, close to the town of Lupeni, which is even accessible by gondola from the city outskirts. The resort sits at an elevation of 1,440 meters in the Southern Carpathians and includes a total of 12 slopes covering a length of 26 km. The longest run is 8 km. In total, 13 lifts are available. The season starts in December and runs through late March/early April.
The resort offers 12 slopes with great variety, suitable for both ski enthusiasts and advanced riders. You can also experience night skiing (until 9 PM) at Straja. The resort is particularly affordable compared to countries like Austria or France. Note that the area mainly consists of blue and red slopes, with two black slopes, making it ideal for intermediate and experienced skiers. If you'd like to improve your skills, you can attend the ski school located within the resort.

The Sinaia Ski Resort is located in the Bucegi Mountains, 124 km from Bucharest and 47 km from Brașov. It reaches up to 2,090 meters and captivates visitors with its picturesque scenery. The resort is known for its elegance, highlighted by royal villas and the Peleș Castle. It’s among the snowiest ski areas in Romania, with up to 3 meters of snow. The season starts in mid-December and lasts until early April.
In Sinaia, skiers and snowboarders of all levels will find a suitable slope! The varied slopes stretch over 20 km and include easy, medium, and difficult runs. There are also 5 km of freeride zones. You can access the slopes via 12 lifts. The resort is perfect for beginners thanks to practice slopes in the valley, but also offers black runs for advanced skiers.
Besides the slopes, you can also explore local culture. Visit Romania’s majestic castles such as Peles Castle or Pelisor Castle. If you’d like to explore the winter scenery further, guided snowshoe or winter hikes are available. You can also enjoy horse-drawn sleigh rides or panoramic gondola tours. The Olimpica Ski Resort is located in Maramureș County, just 15 minutes from the nearby town of Borșa. Its name is well-deserved—this resort is known for its Olympic-grade slopes. The season starts in late December and lasts through late March.
The slopes cover a total of 7 km and include easy to intermediate runs. There are no black slopes, making Olimpica ideal for beginners and intermediate skiers. In addition to regular skiing, night skiing and ski races are offered. Due to its smaller size, the resort has only one lift.
A special highlight is the winter tour events that bring après-ski atmosphere and live music to the valley. Gondola rides offer amazing views of the surrounding nature. You can also explore the area through guided snowshoe hikes or winter walks. Don’t miss out on sledding in this winter paradise!
The Poiana Brașov Ski Resort is located in the Southern Carpathians, about 12 km from Brașov. The season runs from early December to early April.
The slopes span 13.7 km, with additional routes for ski touring and experienced skiers. They cater to all levels, from beginners to pros. You can explore them using 10 lifts. The "Drumul Roșu" is the longest slope in the area. A ski school is available to help you improve your skills—especially useful for beginners.
In Poiana Brașov, you can also try cross-country skiing or participate in winter hikes. Seasonal ice rinks are also available. Enjoy sledding or join the après-ski fun.
The Predeal Ski Resort may be smaller but offers a wide variety. The season begins in late November/early December and ends in late March.
With 7.4 km of slopes, the resort caters to all levels—from beginners to experts. Night skiing is also available. A ski school at the base station helps improve your skills with skiing and snowboarding.
The resort is part of Predeal city, which is also worth exploring. Beyond skiing, check out the Fun Park with sled and tubing tracks. What’s tubing? Snow tubing is a thrilling winter activity where you slide down a secured snowy track on an inflatable rubber ring. It’s like sledding—but faster and more exhilarating. You can also try snowmobile rides, cross-country skiing, and winter hikes.
The Păltiniș Ski Resort is one of the top three child-friendly ski resorts in Romania and is located about 30 km from Sibiu (Hermannstadt). It lies in the Cindrel Mountains at 1,440 meters. The season begins in late November and runs through early April.
The resort offers several runs totaling 1.6 km. Most slopes are moderate (blue level). Night skiing is available until 10 PM. While there are no green slopes, there are practice hills for beginners. This makes the resort perfect for families. The ski schools also feature ski kindergartens, and offer both group and individual lessons with professional instructors. There is a snow park with various snowboarding courses.
Besides skiing, you can try the toboggan run or snow tubing. You can also discover cross-country skiing on 30 km of trails. Guided snowshoe or winter hikes are also available here.
The Semenic Ski Resort is located in the Banat Mountains, about 35 km from Reșița. The season begins in mid-December and runs until mid-March, though snow can last until April or May due to the altitude.
The resort features several runs with a total length of 3.4 km, offering easy and moderate slopes. There are no black slopes for advanced skiers. Popular runs include Debutanților, Goznuta I and II, and Crucea de Brazi. The Debutanților slope is especially beginner-friendly. You can also try the giant slalom here.
In addition to skiing and snowboarding, you can enjoy guided winter hikes and snowshoe hikes. Cross-country skiing is also an option.
