The Republic of Moldova, also known as Moldavia, borders Romania to the west and is otherwise completely surrounded by Ukraine. The border between Romania and Moldova is about 600 kilometers long and runs along the Pruth River.
Border Controls
At the border crossings between Romania and the Republic of Moldova, border controls take place. Moldova is not part of the European Union, so passport and customs checks are part of the border crossing. Therefore, travelers must carry passports and, depending on their country of origin and the purpose of their stay, possibly a visa.
In addition, the number of refugees has increased due to the war between Russia and Ukraine. Many are trying to pass through Moldova to continue north, west, and south into Europe through Romania.
Important Border Crossings
Below we would like to present the most important border crossings between Romania and the Republic of Moldova (Moldavia).
- Albiţa - Leuşeni: This border crossing is located on the European road E581 and is an important traffic hub for goods and passenger transport. However, due to this significance, traffic jams often occur as this bridge also directly connects to the capital of Moldova.
- Sculeni - Sculeni: This border crossing is located on the E58 and also plays a crucial role for goods and passenger traffic. The E58 is also used as a direct connection between Vienna through Slovakia, Ukraine, Romania, and Moldova to Russia. This crossing allows you to reach, in addition to the capital of the Republic of Moldova, the largest city of Bălṭi.
- Stânca - Costesti: This border crossing connects the city of Stânca (Romania) with the city of Costesti (Moldova) via a dam (river barrier).
- Ungheni - Ungheni: This significant border crossing has a railway connection that links the Moldovan capital Chișinău with the Romanian railway network. The line passes through the Eiffel Bridge, making it possible to easily reach the Romanian university city.
- Oancea - Cahul: This border crossing connects the city of Cahul (Moldova) with Oancea (Romania) via the R34 highway. Cahul is known as the third-largest city of the Republic of Moldova and is located in the southwest.
- Radauti Prut - Lipcanii: This border crossing provides a connection between Lipcani (a city in Moldova) and Rădăuți-Prut (in northern Romania). Although this crossing is not heavily trafficked, it remains important due to the Drum Public National M5, which serves as an access route into Ukrainian territory. However, due to the war, there is currently little passenger and freight traffic at this location.
- Giurgiulești - Galati: This small border crossing connects Giurgiulești (Moldova) and Galati (Romania) and is particularly significant as it is the only access point to the Danube for the Republic of Moldova and also a border point with Ukraine.
Romania
The following section gives you an overview of whether you need a vignette and if there are any specific toll roads.
Romania: Vignette Requirement (or not?)
In Romania, there is an electronic vignette called “Rovinieta” that you need for the Romanian national road network. It is important to note that trailers (caravans) do not require their own vignette, and motorhomes, regardless of weight, must have a car vignette. The electronic vignette typically registers vehicle data and the validity period in a database, so the consumer only receives a receipt for the amount paid, which should be kept. Depending on the vehicle class, you must choose a different vignette, and there are different prices. For more information on the digital vignette, click here. Order your digital vignette easily and conveniently from home.
Route-based Tolls
In Romania, there is no route-based toll, but you need a digital vignette, and additional fees should be considered when crossing the Danube.
Danube Crossing: Bridge Toll
Please note that additional fees apply when crossing the Danube. This river flows through Romania and separates the two countries (Romania and Bulgaria). If you wish to use one of the many bridges or the ferry to cross, additional fees will apply.
