The border between Romania and Hungary stretches over 450 kilometers. At the same time, the border also concludes at the tripoint with Ukraine and ends at the tripoint with Serbia.
The border crossings connect these two countries and their rich history and cultural diversity. They are significant for cross-border trade, tourism, and daily traffic between Romania and Hungary. Below, we have compiled a selection of important border crossings between Romania and Hungary:
Please be aware that you will encounter (strict) border and identity checks between Romania and Hungary during your journey. On one hand, there is the risk of illegal migration, as Romania and Hungary are often used as transit countries for Europe. On the other hand, identity checks occur because Romania has not yet been part of the Schengen Area. However, it should be noted that these border checks and their strictness could change soon, as Romania will become part of the Schengen Area from January 2025. Of course, border checks also exist due to general safety regulations, including counterterrorism, customs and trade checks, and national security interests.
Due to the checks, there may be waiting times, the length of which can be difficult to predict. Therefore, you should allow extra time for your journey.
The following section provides an overview of whether you need a vignette and if there are specific toll sections.
In Romania, there is an electronic vignette called "Rovinieta," which you need for the Romanian national road network. It is important to know that trailers (caravans) do not require their own vignette, and motorhomes, regardless of their weight, must have a passenger car vignette. The electronic vignette typically records the vehicle data and the vignette's validity period in a database, so the consumer only receives a receipt for the amount paid, which should be kept. Depending on the vehicle class, you need to choose a different vignette, and the prices vary. For more information about the digital vignette, you can find it here. In Romania, there is no route-specific toll, but you will need a digital vignette and should consider additional fees when crossing the Danube.

In Hungary, there is a vignette requirement for passenger cars, trailers, and motorhomes up to 3.5 t gross vehicle weight (GVW). This is the so-called e-Matrica (Hungarian vignette), with which the toll is electronically checked via the license plate. You should purchase the digital vignette (e-Vignette) online before your trip, as failure to do so can result in fines.
Depending on the vehicle class, your vehicle will be charged differently. For example, passenger cars with more than 7 seats are charged more than passenger cars with fewer than 7 seats. More information about the different vehicle classes can be found here:
Within the various vehicle classes, you can choose between different durations. If you need more detailed information about the vehicle classes, especially for motorhomes, you can find more information here.
You will need to pay the route-specific toll if your vehicle is over 3.5 t GVW. This means motorhomes (over 3.5 t GVW), buses, and trucks must pay a route-dependent electronic toll, which is calculated via the HU-GO system (electronic toll collection). Therefore, the route-specific toll replaces the vignette, and you no longer need it.
